After the course for the training of Starlight monitors, this summer, in the Sierra de Cádiz activities are scheduled to observe and enjoy the night sky

Aug 4, 2021

After the Starlight Monitors training course held last June at the farm and rural accommodation Tambor del Llano, this summer in the Sierra de Cádiz the first activities are organized that promote the observation and enjoyment of the night skies of this region , as one of the most interesting and relevant heritage values for the inhabitants of the area and also for visitors.

Tambor del Llano, Starlight accommodation since 2015, continues with its Astronomy Nights program throughout the summer, the Oleum Viride oil mill in Zahara de la Sierra has scheduled a Wine and Stars activity directed by Luis Lucero and the Grazalema City Council, within its Summer cultural program Charming Nights, has scheduled an astronomical observation session at the Tagus viewpoint, entitled Skies that fall in love.

The sky and the dissemination of astronomy has become a tourist resource that opens up new economic perspectives and promotes the need to protect the sky from light pollution caused by street lamps and lights, mainly public, in towns and cities.

The province of Cádiz has about 200,000 hectares, 75% of them within natural spaces such as the Sierra de Cádiz, which are largely free of night light pollution, although much remains to be done in terms of renovating public lighting for many of their towns and cities.

The Sierra de Cádiz has all the options to become one of the main destinations for astronomy tourism. It is currently processing certification as a Starlight reserve. A Starlight Reserve is a protected natural space where a commitment is established for the defense of the quality of the night sky and access to the light of the stars. Its function is to preserve the quality of the night sky and the different associated values, whether cultural, scientific, astronomical, landscape or natural.

We hope that we will soon be able to count on this distinction awarded by the Starlight Foundation and that has international recognition and positioning for these territories that become reserves for the protection of stellar heritage.

The Commonwealth of the Peoples of the Sierra de Cádiz has set this objective and is working to achieve it
