2022 will be an important year for astrotourism in the Sierra de Cádiz

This is its first year as a Starlight destination, since at the end of last year, it was certified as such by the International Starlight Foundation.

Starlight Destinations are not only places with excellent sky quality, but must have the means to guarantee their protection, and also be places that can be visited, that is, they must have adequate infrastructure and activities related to the tourist offer and its integration into night nature.

So far in the Sierra de Cádiz there is only one Starlight hotel, Tambor del Llano, located in the heart of the Natural Park and with a program of astronomy sessions and workshops for the entire year 2022.

The Sierra de Cádiz faces a great challenge to become an outstanding destination for star tourism in Andalusia

The certification of the Sierra de Cádiz as an optimal space or destination for the development of astrotourism implies a lot of work to be done for the people of this territory and the opportunity to turn this area into a place where the exceptional heritage of the night sky is preserved and disseminated with the one they count

The public lighting of these towns must be reviewed to adapt it to avoid light pollution, an awareness campaign must be launched among its inhabitants, programs of activities and events related to astronomy must be offered, adequate spaces and infrastructure must be prepared to host and develop astrotourism programs, we must make this area of ​​Cadiz known as a space with exceptional conditions for star tourism and we must have monitors and guides prepared to carry out the activities.

Throughout this year we will see how these and other needs are being implemented to guarantee the consolidation of the Sierra de Cádiz as a Starlight destination. Some municipalities are already working on it. You can start by programming some specific activities that serve to communicate to the neighbors the potential of the heritage they have when they look at the sky and also to attract new visitors.
